Beran was born on the 17th of August, 1968, in Istanbul. He was a big-city child who grow up and studied in Istanbul where he later started his business career and established his own company. Beran believes that he received a good university education but he believes that during his teenage years his most significant influences and his most important education came from Tevfik Akdağ, his father. Beran’s father was a well educated and intellectual man and a famous poet who wrote four books. He wrote what are described in Turkish as “2nd New Poems.”
While he was attending high school at St. George’s Austrian (Sankt Georg Avusturya Lisesi) in Istanbul, Beran developed his life-long interest in sports. He had a special skill for table tennis and started winning trophies in both Istanbul and national championships. He experimented with and developed a love for music at age 16 and taught himself to play guitar. His music career began in 1987 and when he was only 19, he started playing professionally in Istanbul clubs. Since then he has never stopped making music as well as continuing to play table tennis, tennis and other sports.
He attended İstanbul University and graduated with a diploma in Computer Engineering, Programming and Business Administration. After finishing his university studies, he started his soon-to-be sky-rocketing career in the IT sector with IBM. He got in early and rode the “dot-com boom.” Beran became curious about a new technology in Turkey called “web pages” and he decided to go to the UK to study how to program in HTML, the code behind these “web pages.” There were no web sites in Turkey at that time and he built one of the first for Arena Bilgisayar A.Ş. and later for other Information Technology companies. In 1996, Beran decided to establish his own Multimedia and Internet company, Yelkovan MultiMedia. It was the first multimedia and Internet company in Turkey. Originally, his company developed multimedia CD’s for companies for internal and other uses and then they started creating web sites. His customers included Nissan, Turkcell, Telsim and Garanti Bank to name just a few. Yelkovan became very successful and eventually there were 20 staff working for his company.
While he was in high school at the Austrian College Beran first visited Kaş in 1986. He says he was fascinated with Kaş from the first time he saw it. After that first visit, he started coming to Kaş every year at least once and sometimes twice every summer holiday season. He has friends in Kaş he met more than 25 years.ago.Beran dove for the first time in 1999 and earned his Open Water Diver certification that same year in Egypt. He says he was “really crazy” about Scuba Diving for many years and since 2000 he has freelanced in many different locations besides Turkey. Since that time he has made more then 1000 dives in many different countries such as Egypt, Thailand, Burma, Cuba, Venezuela, The Galapagos, and The Caribbean just to name a few. In 2006, he earned his Dive Master certification. He then started seasonal work as a freelance dive master in several diving schools in Kaş including Dragoman and Pasham. He then developed an interest in underwater photography. He later entered and won competitions in the digital underwater photography category. Some of his photos have been published in magazines and Internet sites.
Beran has been a photographer for over 25 years. He first started with an analogue camera, however, after establishing his multimedia company, he started work as a professional photographer. He likes to shoot in a variety of environments such as underwater and outdoors. The night sky (astrophotography) is a speciality of his along with nature and his travel experiences. He recently taught a course about Photography Basics and Long Exposure Photo Techniques hosted by the Kaş Culture House. On the sixth of May, 2011, he organised his first personal photo exhibition in the Kaş Culture House.Beran is very interested in astronomy and astrophotography. He earned an amateur astronomy certification from Ege University and started giving astronomy lessons and courses in Kaş. He shoots astrophotos and sends some to prominent science magazines like Atlas, BBC Focus and others. He later established the astronomy club in Kaş and started giving courses in the subject. He conducted a three day “Star Party” at Eflauten Camp in Çukurbağ valley a few kilometres outside of Kaş. It was attended by ten Turkish enthusiasts of astronomy. Beran plans to do more of these in the future. He can do them for English speakers if a group can come together.
In 2006, after more than ten successful years, Beran decided to change his lifestyle, settle down in Kaş and work freelance. He believes that a person should do what he loves first and that whatever income that person needs will follow. He is someone who does something solely for enjoyment, not for payment. He is, in his words, an “amateur” which, according to The Free Dictionary, is a Latin source word, amtor, meaning “lover, devoted friend, devotee, enthusiastic pursuer of an objective,”
Beran is a “good will” ambassador of a singular kind. He has travelled to more than 20 countries, he thinks that Latin America and especially the Galapagos are his favourites so far. India was very exotic and Colombia was his favourite Latin American country. He travels only with his backpack, he can move quickly and lightly that way, not encumbered with luggage and other non-necessary things and often dives in the countries he visits. He believes that travelling and meeting people in foreign countries and different cultures is good “medicine” for him. This meeting of cultures is an emotional and psychological healing of sorts for him. He says that when he is “healed” with the “medicine” of his travels, Kaş becomes a new place to him all over again and he never loses his enthusiasm for his adopted home.Weblog: http://beranakdag.wordpress.com/.
