MAHO speaks several languages including English and Turkish and is one of the most experienced guides in Kaş for almost all adventure activities including: Canyoning, Mountain Biking and Sea Kayaking.
The first thing that MAHO tells us is that a very important part of engaging in adventure sports is to be prepared mentally, physically and to have the right equipment.
MAHO was born in Mardin near the Syrian and Iraqi borders. His father was a primary school teacher and MAHO later took his university studies in Ankara specializing in National Business.
MAHO had always had an adventuresome heart and early on spent a lot of time outdoors in various activities. In 1994 he started professional adventure activity guiding and in 1995 learned canyoning and mountain biking. MAHO joined BT in 2003 because of their reputation for being the first adventure sport company to do canyoning, mountain biking and kayaking.
MAHO told us a couple of interesting stories related to sea kayaking. A few years ago a private and experienced sea kayaking tour group came to challenge Kekova. Because of their experience, the group was guided out to the near open sea. A strong wind came up and capsized some of the kayaks and the tour guide asked the nearby Coast Guard to come pick them up out of the water. However, one of the kayaks was lost and presumed sunken. For several weeks they searched without success for the kayak and finally decided it was lost permanently. About 4 months later, the Turkish embassy received a call from the Egyptian embassy that a kayak registered in Turkey had been found on the Egyptian coastline. It was the BT kayak! For the normal tour group with little or no experience, the protected harbor and island area around Kekova cause little or no problem with the wind and waves. If the guide decides the weather is too rough for the experience of the group, they will do a different activity that day and wait for the wind to calm down. Always safety and fun first!
Another story involved an American couple in their mid-70’s. They were each in a kayak and MAHO noticed the man had difficulty keeping his boat straight even thought MAHO kept calling out instructions to the man to keep from zig-zagging. It seemed that whatever MAHO said, the man would do the opposite! Finally the man’s wife told MAHO that the gentleman had a left/right brain dysfunction and that if MAHO wanted the customer to to right he should tell himg to go left and vice-versa!! After that, the customer had little difficulty guiding his kayak properly.
