Wyn is 71 years old and has been married to Nancy for 47 years. He retired early, about 16 years ago, and left the UK to live in Cyprus. About 6 years ago they moved to Turkey. This was partly due to the fact they had been sailing Turkish waters for several years and and it made sense to be based in Turkey. Additionally they were very attracted to the Country and the people. Wyn has been sailing over 50 years. He started with canoes and dinghies and progressed to motorboats then yachts. His present boat is a 9 mtr Catalac which he has had for about 20 years. He is a RYA Yachtmaster and the founder and Life President of the Paphos International Sailing Club [PISC]. Having spent an average of four or five months a year cruising Turkey and the Greek Islands for many years Nancy and Wyn have a good knowledge of Marina’s, anchorages and sailing in Turkey.
Both Nancy and Wyn have always been interested in outdoor activities and in the past were involved in sport. Nancy competed at Marathons and Fell Walking races. Wyn did the same plus swimming and Triatholons at the international level. These days Wyn says he is content with sailing and travel. He and Nancy usually spend a few months each year exploring the USA in their RV (Recreational Vehicle or Motor Home. This is much like cruising only on the Land. In the future they hope to explore a little more of inland Turkey and keep on sailing as long as they are able. Wyn and Nancy think that sailing is a great way to meet interesting people of many nationalities who, like them, love exploring the wonderful Turkish coast.
Selwyn’s update about the New Kaş Marina follows:
There is a temporary Marina office now open. If approaching from Kaş it is located in the Porto-cabins on the right of the road across from the Marina entrance still under construction.
I had a meeting with the new Manager Tuncay Özses who used to be at the Finike marina. He confirmed that the Marina wil be opened by Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdoğan on the 15th 0f April. Obviously there are likely to be a few things that may not be fully operational at this date but the essentials should be fine.
It seems that the lift operator, a man named Celal Saral, from Finike will be in charge of lift outs which is good as he is the best I have ever used. Another man called Ümit Gölgeci, and again from the Finike Marina, will be running the front office. Ümit is a first class guy who is pleasant and knowledgeable. He also speaks very good English and German. The Technical Service person from Kemer will be acting as Tungay’s no.2. So it would seem that there is going to be a good experienced team to get the Marina off to a good start. The prices are very slightly higher than Finike and will be based on the square meters of the boat, A rough guide is a 50sqm boat will cost about €2,300.00 per year. That should be about the size of a 38ft (11.6 m) Yacht or 36ft (11 m) Motor Boat. To be fair the Marina will have much better facilities than Finike. These will include a good swimming pool, Cafe and Restaurant, fitness centre and spa. There will also be a selection of shops, a Yacht Club and of course excellent showers, toilets and other such facilities. It is hoped that good Technical services will be available such as Marine Engineers, painters, wood and glass fibre work, and a stainless steel workshop. A Chandlers store will soon be opening on the corner next to the new Halkbank just a few meters from the marina entrance coming from Kaş centre. So it would seem that some of the Kaş businesses might be in for a little competition which should be a good thing.
It would seem that the Marina will prove to be a first class asset to Kaş and may encourage a little more enterprise from the Kaş authorities and local businesses.
